  "notes": [
"The chapter opens with gratitude for revelation. Its first description concerns integrity: the Book contains no crookedness. Before presenting unusual journeys and hidden outcomes, the reader is given a stable point of orientation in the revealed message.",
"The Book joins warning with good news, and belief with good action. Its purpose is neither fascination with mysteries nor reassurance without responsibility. The stories that follow invite conduct shaped by both accountability and hope.",
"This brief verse extends the promise beyond the temporary rewards familiar in ordinary life. Its permanence prepares a contrast with gardens, possessions, journeys, and achievements that may appear secure but remain vulnerable to change and loss.",
"The warning now addresses the claim that God has taken a son. The chapter treats this as a question of truth about the Creator, while directing its argument toward the assertion rather than supplying a human portrait of God.",
"Repeating an ancestral assertion does not turn it into knowledge. The verse challenges speech about God that lacks a reliable basis. Its emphasis on the seriousness of words anticipates later warnings against confident guessing about unfamiliar stories.",
"The messenger's grief over rejection is acknowledged with striking tenderness. Concern for others can become overwhelming, but their response is not wholly within the caller's control. The verse checks consuming sorrow without asking him to abandon compassionate communication.",
"Earthly beauty is presented as a setting for moral choice. The question is who acts best, not who accumulates the most attractive surroundings. Gardens and wealth later make this contrast visible through a conversation between two men.",
"The richly adorned earth can become bare ground. Read beside the previous verse, this change exposes the fragility of the stage on which people compete. Possessions matter less as permanent security than as opportunities for responsible conduct.",
"The cave narrative begins by placing its wonder within a much larger field of divine signs. The verse names the Cave and the Inscription without locating them. Curiosity about a particular site should not displace the story's teaching.",
"The young people seek shelter and ask for mercy together with sound direction. Their prayer concerns how to live through danger, not merely how to escape it. The cave becomes a setting for dependence, resolve, and hope.",
"Their hearing is sealed and years pass in the cave. The narrative presents preservation beyond ordinary human control, while leaving the physical process unexplained. Its focus remains the protection of vulnerable believers rather than a medical account of sleep.",
"When the sleepers awaken, the elapsed time becomes a question. Human estimates will prove limited, even for those who experienced the event. The chapter repeatedly uses such limits to teach humility about knowledge and confidence in divine awareness.",
"The account identifies the sleepers as young believers whose guidance increased. Their significance does not depend on names, social rank, or a verified monument. Faith is shown as something lived under pressure and strengthened through a sincere response.",
"The young people speak openly about the Lord of heaven and earth. Their courage is described as firmness granted to their hearts. The verse connects inward conviction with public speech while refusing to divide ultimate worship among competing deities.",
"The young believers question the evidence for their community's worship. Their argument turns on whether the claim has a clear warrant, not whether it is customary. Inventing religious authority is presented as a grave wrong in itself.",
"Withdrawal from coercive surroundings leads toward a cave rather than a position of worldly strength. The promised spaciousness is mercy within difficulty. A confined refuge can therefore represent freedom to remain faithful when familiar society has become threatening.",
"The movement of sunlight gives the refuge a vivid setting, but the passage does not supply coordinates. Its concluding focus is guidance. A reconstruction can suggest a sheltered cave without claiming that a modern candidate is the verified place.",
"The account describes turning bodies, apparent wakefulness, and a dog at the entrance. These details create a sense of protected remoteness. The awe surrounding the scene discourages intrusion rather than inviting readers to invent additional physical particulars.",
"Their first practical concern is food, bought discreetly with a silver coin. Uncertainty about time gives way to kindness and caution in action. The narrative makes an extraordinary awakening tangible through the ordinary needs of a small group.",
"The sleepers fear violent persecution or forced religious return. This explains their secrecy and the significance of refuge. Their concern should be read within the danger described in the story, without projecting suspicion onto every unfamiliar community.",
"Their discovery becomes a sign of resurrection, while the townspeople dispute what to build. The verse reports that discussion; reporting a proposed monument does not itself settle every later question about buildings, burial places, or devotional practice.",
"Different numbers of sleepers are mentioned, and careless speculation is explicitly checked. The reader is directed toward limited, careful discussion. The lesson can be understood without turning an uncertain headcount into the main achievement of studying the story.",
"A simple statement about future plans interrupts the narrative. Human intention is real, but tomorrow is not wholly under human command. The next verse completes the thought by placing plans within dependence on God and openness to guidance.",
"Remembering God qualifies confident promises about the future. The verse also leaves room to recover after forgetting and to seek a better direction. Humility about tomorrow need not prevent action; it changes the spirit in which action is planned.",
"The passage gives three hundred years and nine more. It does not anchor those years to a verified modern calendar date or a named reign. The following verse returns attention from chronological curiosity to God's fuller knowledge of the event.",
"The duration discussion ends with divine knowledge, sight, hearing, and authority. None of the disputed details places the story outside that knowledge. The reader is invited to recognize the boundary between what the text gives and what remains unseen.",
"After the cave account, the instruction is to recite the revelation faithfully. Its permanence contrasts with shifting human claims and uncertain reconstructions. Refuge is located ultimately in God, not in possessing every historical detail of an unusual narrative.",
"The messenger is told to remain with devoted people instead of looking past them toward worldly display. This gives social force to the chapter's teaching about appearances. Sincere worship and companionship outweigh the prestige of wealthier company.",
"The truth is announced and the listener's response is placed before them with a severe warning. The imagery concerns divine judgment, not permission for readers to inflict punishment. Freedom to respond does not make the response morally insignificant.",
"The promise addresses people whose faith bears fruit in action. Against fears of obscurity or lack of worldly recognition, the verse assures that good work is not wasted. Its value does not depend on public applause or visible success.",
"Gardens, flowing rivers, fine clothing, and rest describe a generous welcome. These are scriptural images of promised reward rather than a location available to map. Their beauty answers the social exclusion and danger encountered earlier in the chapter.",
"A new example introduces two men and a richly productive property. Grapes, palms, and cultivated ground establish real material abundance. The problem will emerge in the owner's interpretation of that abundance, rather than in cultivation or beauty themselves.",
"The gardens give their full yield, supported by a flowing river. Their success makes the owner's coming complacency understandable but not justified. Productive systems depend on conditions their apparent owner did not create and cannot guarantee forever.",
"The owner measures himself against his companion through money and social strength. Gratitude has become competition. The verse exposes a familiar shift: possessions cease to be entrusted resources and become supposed evidence that one person is inherently greater.",
"Entering his garden, the owner imagines its disappearance to be impossible. His confidence is described as wrongdoing against himself. The danger lies in a judgment that makes present prosperity seem exempt from the vulnerability shared by created things.",
"He combines doubt about resurrection with confidence that any return would favor him. Present comfort becomes his unsupported prediction of future entitlement. The narrative challenges this assumption that worldly advantage automatically proves divine approval or guarantees a final reward.",
"The companion answers by recalling the owner's dependent human origin. This brings the conversation away from comparative wealth and toward creation. A person formed through stages cannot reasonably treat personal power or possessions as the ultimate source of existence.",
"The companion states his own worship without adopting the owner's boast. The verse's brevity gives the response steadiness: God is his Lord, without partner. Faithful speech here is personal, clear, and independent of the other man's greater resources.",
"The companion proposes a different response to entering the garden: acknowledge God's will and the source of strength. He also names their unequal resources without accepting that inequality as spiritual defeat. Gratitude interrupts the conversion of property into superiority.",
"The companion imagines both his own improvement and the garden's loss. These possibilities challenge the owner's certainty, rather than provide a general forecast about wealthy people. The point is that current conditions do not control what tomorrow may bring.",
"The loss of accessible water offers another way the garden could fail. Its abundance rests on a resource that cannot be recovered merely by desire. The example draws attention to dependence hidden beneath apparently secure agricultural prosperity.",
"The ruined garden makes the owner's earlier assumptions visible as mistakes. His gestures of regret contrast with his confident entry before destruction. The story turns on a changed understanding of dependence, not on admiration for the spectacle of loss.",
"The social strength in which the owner boasted cannot reverse the outcome. Neither followers nor personal effort can supply unlimited control. This answers his earlier comparison directly: resources are useful, but they cannot carry the weight of ultimate security.",
"The example closes by locating final protection, reward, and outcome with God. Its lesson reaches beyond one ruined property. The reader is asked to reassess what deserves trust when attractive and productive things remain subject to loss.",
"A compact image follows vegetation from rain to dryness and dispersal. Life's beauty is neither denied nor made permanent. The changing landscape teaches proportion, helping the reader enjoy what is given without confusing its season with endless security.",
"Wealth and children are acknowledged as attractive features of life. Enduring good deeds are then given a deeper measure of reward and hope. The contrast invites responsible affection and use, rather than reducing family or possessions to the whole purpose of living.",
"The mountains are removed and the earth is exposed before a gathering that excludes nobody. The image overturns familiar boundaries and hiding places. Accountability is comprehensive; prominence and obscurity alike offer no exemption from the final meeting.",
"People arrive before their Lord stripped of the protections they imagined permanent. The reminder of their first creation counters denial of an appointed meeting. The scene links return with origin and exposes the fragility of worldly self-sufficiency.",
"The guilty are startled by a record attentive to small and great actions. Its completeness is joined to the assurance that God wrongs nobody. The image encourages seriousness about ordinary conduct without portraying judgment as careless or arbitrary.",
"Iblis is identified as belonging to the jinn and refusing the command concerning Adam. The verse questions choosing an enemy as protector. Its moral focus is misplaced allegiance, not an invitation to invent the appearance of unseen beings.",
"The alleged partners did not witness creation and are not needed as divine assistants. This removes another basis for granting them ultimate authority. Human claims about the unseen must not manufacture a partnership that revelation itself rejects.",
"Those treated as divine partners cannot answer the desperate call made to them. The imagined relationship fails at the moment of need. The passage develops the chapter's question about refuge by contrasting presumed protection with its final absence.",
"The guilty recognize the Fire and cannot find an escape. The warning is presented as part of the final judgment, not as a scene readers can reproduce or administer. Its purpose is to awaken responsibility before that recognition arrives.",
"The Quran's many examples meet a human tendency toward contentiousness. Stories can illuminate, yet a determined reader can turn them into occasions for avoidance. The verse asks whether discussion is serving understanding or merely protecting an unchanged position.",
"The passage questions resistance after guidance has come. Waiting for an unmistakable catastrophe can become an excuse to postpone belief and repentance. The invitation is to respond while there remains space for a willing and thoughtful change.",
"Messengers bring good news and warning, while opponents attempt to defeat truth through false argument. The verse distinguishes communication from control over another person's response. Mockery does not remove the seriousness of what the warning asks listeners to consider.",
"Rejection is connected with forgetting what one's hands have sent ahead. The problem is therefore moral as well as intellectual. The description of blocked hearing and understanding portrays the grave effects of persistently refusing a reminder.",
"God's forgiveness and mercy are named before the warning about an appointed term. Delayed consequences should not be mistaken for approval, but delay does leave room for return. The verse keeps patience and accountability within the same frame.",
"Earlier communities are recalled through wrongdoing and an appointed end. The verse does not name a particular excavation or supply a destruction date. Ruins can prompt reflection, but identifying an archaeological layer with this warning would require separate evidence.",
"Moses resolves to travel toward the meeting of two waters, however long the search takes. A prophet is shown seeking knowledge. The Quran leaves the precise geography unnamed, so the lesson of determination does not depend on fixing a route.",
"The travelers lose track of their fish at the meeting of the waters. What looks like an interruption becomes important to finding their destination. The narrative unfolds through remembered signs rather than providing a map that settles the location.",
"Moses asks for food and acknowledges fatigue. These ordinary needs make the learning journey concrete. Spiritual purpose does not erase bodily limitation, and the request becomes the occasion for his companion to recall the sign they passed.",
"The companion recalls the fish's remarkable departure near a rock. The admission includes his failure to mention it sooner. Learning here involves recovering an overlooked detail and speaking honestly, rather than pretending the journey has proceeded without confusion.",
"Moses recognizes the remembered event as the sign they sought, and they retrace their steps. Going back is the right movement when a clue has been missed. The scene gives practical form to humility in the pursuit of knowledge.",
"They meet a servant granted mercy and special knowledge. The Quran does not name him here; the transmitted account in Sahih al-Bukhari 122 calls him Khidr. That distinction keeps the chapter's wording separate from its accompanying report.",
"Moses asks permission to follow and learn. The request is respectful and directed toward sound guidance, not possession of secrets for their own sake. The scene models the willingness of an accomplished person to become a learner.",
"The teacher warns that Moses will struggle to remain patient. The warning prepares the reader for events whose meaning will not be immediately apparent. It also makes the conditions of their unusual journey explicit before they begin together.",
"Patience becomes difficult when a person cannot grasp what is happening. The verse recognizes this tension rather than treating perplexity as imaginary. The following events will make clear why incomplete knowledge can provoke urgent and understandable moral questions.",
"Moses promises patience while qualifying his intention by God's will. This echoes the chapter's earlier guidance about future plans. His sincere promise does not make him immune to difficulty; the journey will expose the distance between intention and experience.",
"The teacher asks Moses to wait until explanations are offered. This condition belongs to their particular journey and the knowledge described in it. It should not become a general demand that people silently accept unexplained wrongdoing from human authorities.",
"When the boat is damaged, Moses objects out of concern for its passengers. His response recognizes a serious apparent danger. The story preserves that moral alarm even though a later explanation will disclose circumstances he could not yet know.",
"The teacher recalls his warning about patience after the first protest. The brief exchange keeps the narrative's central tension visible: Moses judges the action he can see, while its explanation remains withheld until their journey reaches its end.",
"Moses acknowledges forgetting and asks not to be treated harshly. The response combines responsibility with a request for understanding. It presents learning as a relationship that can include correction, humility, and another opportunity after a genuine mistake.",
"Moses strongly objects when a boy is killed, describing him as innocent of killing anyone. The verse does not minimize the apparent horror. The exceptional explanation later given is not permission for ordinary people to harm children on speculative grounds.",
"The teacher repeats that Moses would not bear patiently with him. The repetition intensifies the difficulty rather than making the events ordinary. The reader, like Moses, still faces a gap between visible actions and the explanation yet to come.",
"Moses sets a clear limit: another question will justify their parting. His statement accepts responsibility for the condition already agreed. The episode shows a learner recognizing that sincere intention alone has not enabled him to fulfill a demanding promise.",
"A town refuses hospitality, yet the teacher repairs a failing wall there. Moses observes that payment could have been requested. The scene shifts from alarming damage to unexpected generosity, preparing an explanation about vulnerable owners who are absent.",
"The journey together ends, but the explanation is not withheld forever. The teacher now turns from actions to their meaning. This transition matters: the narrative itself supplies its interpretation instead of asking the reader to invent hidden reasons.",
"The boat belonged to poor workers threatened by a king who seized sound vessels. Its damage is explained as protection of their livelihood. The account draws attention to exploitation by power and to facts unavailable during Moses' first judgment.",
"The boy's case is explained through knowledge concerning his believing parents and feared future oppression. This knowledge belongs to the exceptional narrative. People cannot claim similar certainty about a child's future to justify harm or override ordinary moral responsibility.",
"The explanation speaks of a replacement child characterized by greater purity and tenderness. It describes a particular divine purpose disclosed within the story, not a human rule for evaluating children's lives. The grief and gravity of loss should not be trivialized.",
"The wall concealed treasure belonging to two orphans until their maturity. The teacher explicitly denies acting on his own command. This conclusion distinguishes the extraordinary episode from personal intuition and brings the three explanations together under mercy and limited human knowledge.",
"The next account responds to a question about Dhul-Qarnayn. The Quran gives a title and selected episodes without a birth name or dynasty. Identifications with particular ancient rulers remain interpretive proposals, not details supplied by this verse.",
"Dhul-Qarnayn is granted authority and practical means. The story will judge power by how it is used among communities. Ability and access are therefore a responsibility rather than automatic proof that every action of a ruler is right.",
"The ruler acts on the means available to him and follows a way. This short transition gives the account movement without supplying a complete itinerary. Its emphasis is purposeful travel within a larger story about the responsibilities of power.",
"The narrative describes the sun as encountered at the western limit of his journey. Ibn Kathir explains the sunset as an observer's appearance, like sunset over water. The ethical question concerns his treatment of the people he finds there.",
"Dhul-Qarnayn distinguishes wrongdoing from other conduct and recognizes a further return to God. His authority is therefore not presented as the final court of existence. The passage keeps earthly judgment within the larger frame of divine accountability.",
"Belief and right action meet good treatment and an easy command. The contrast with the preceding verse makes conduct relevant to the ruler's response. Authority is not measured simply by severity, but also by its capacity for proportionate kindness.",
"Another route carries the account onward. The repeated travel formula connects different communities without inviting certainty about their modern borders. The narrative selects encounters for their meaning, leaving most of the ruler's wider history outside its scope.",
"The traveler reaches people exposed to the rising sun without shelter from it. Their situation is described briefly, without identifying a modern ethnic group. The account broadens the range of human conditions encountered by someone entrusted with power.",
"The verse affirms that the ruler and his circumstances are fully known to God. Its brevity prevents the reader from confusing sparse narration with limited divine knowledge. Not every detail must be supplied for the episode's purpose to be understood.",
"The repeated movement prepares the final encounter of the journey. Dhul-Qarnayn continues to use the means granted to him. The story's concern remains what he does when he meets human need, rather than a complete reconstruction of his travels.",
"Between two mountain barriers, he encounters people with difficulty understanding speech. Communication is presented as an obstacle to cooperation, not evidence of lesser human worth. Their request nevertheless becomes intelligible enough for a shared protective project to begin.",
"The people describe harm from Gog and Magog and offer payment for a barrier. The Quran does not identify these names with a present ethnic population. The scene concerns a threatened community seeking help through practical collective protection.",
"Dhul-Qarnayn declines the offered tribute and asks instead for assistance in the work. He acknowledges that his existing resources come from his Lord. The response turns the community from passive purchasers of safety into participants in their protection.",
"The barrier is built through materials, labor, and coordinated instructions. These concrete details portray practical skill in the service of protection. They do not establish that any surviving wall is the Quranic structure without independent and persuasive evidence.",
"The completed defense cannot be climbed or pierced by those threatening the community. The verse records its effectiveness within the narrative. Its success will immediately be qualified by the ruler's acknowledgment that even strong works remain subject to God's promise.",
"Dhul-Qarnayn calls the barrier mercy from his Lord and recognizes that it will not last beyond the appointed promise. Achievement does not become self-worship. Even a successful public work is held within gratitude and awareness of its limits.",
"The scene passes from surging multitudes to the trumpet and final assembly. The narrative's horizon expands beyond any single kingdom or barrier. Human divisions and movements ultimately give way to a gathering in which everyone becomes answerable.",
"Hell is presented openly in the account of judgment. What could previously be dismissed as a warning becomes unavoidable. The verse's brevity intensifies the transition from worldly argument to a reality encountered without the protective distance of denial.",
"The warning identifies people who screened themselves from remembrance and would not listen. The concern is a sustained refusal of guidance, not a physical disability. Images of seeing and hearing describe the moral direction of attention.",
"Created servants cannot replace God as ultimate guardians. The verse returns to a central theme running through the cave, gardens, and journeys: the search for reliable refuge. Misplaced dependence becomes especially serious when it reshapes worship itself.",
"The reader is asked to consider who loses most through their own works. The question unsettles easy measures of success. Effort, confidence, and public achievement require examination, since activity alone does not establish that its direction is sound.",
"People may believe their work is excellent while its direction has gone astray. The verse invites self-examination instead of complacent judgment of others. Confidence needs correction by truth and responsible conduct, rather than serving as its own evidence.",
"Rejection of God's signs and the final meeting strips works of their claimed value in this judgment scene. The verse challenges the assumption that visible accomplishment automatically carries ultimate weight. Its measure is connected with truth, faith, and return.",
"The passage links the final warning with rejection and ridicule of revelation and messengers. Mockery can keep a person from considering a serious claim honestly. The stated consequence belongs to divine judgment, not to private acts of punishment.",
"Believers who act well receive Paradise as their welcome. The promise answers the preceding warning with hope grounded in both conviction and conduct. Throughout the chapter, enduring security is connected with this relationship rather than with property or prestige.",
"The promised inhabitants do not wish to leave. Beyond permanence, the verse suggests contentment free of the restlessness that often accompanies earthly possession. It completes the contrast with the garden owner whose confidence in lasting satisfaction proved misplaced.",
"Even an ocean used as ink could not exhaust the Lord's words. The image places all the chapter's lessons about limited knowledge within an expansive conclusion. What readers learn is real, yet it never amounts to mastery of divine knowledge.",
"The chapter closes with the messenger's humanity, revelation, and the oneness of God. Hope for the meeting takes practical form in good work and sincere worship. Extraordinary stories return the reader to an ordinary life of responsible faithfulness."
